“Metal has to go through fire to melt and be turned into a sword. Be strong because this is just a test. You are being melted, being molded into a stronger person. This burning will pass, and you will find rest. Don’t give up, honey.”
“No matter how much you want to protect the people you love, Caleb, you can’t. You can only be there for them. You can’t choose their path because it is theirs alone. It’s their fight, not yours.”
“I’ve learned to accept that it’s not my fault when bad things happen to me or to the people I love. It’s just the way life is. It’s not fair. If you’re one of the unlucky ones, then fight. Be stronger. Be stronger because you have no choice. Be stronger than you are right now because if you’re not, life will swallow you up and spit you out. And then you’ll die with a broken heart.” Just like my mom.
“Give me back your smiles because there is something wrong with the universe without them.”
It was like watching someone at war with the world every day. And maybe she was.
She was like a puzzle that was missing a few pieces. Maybe I’d carve my own pieces to complete her.
“Everyone!” I yelled in the hallway. “She’s mine. If you touch even a hair on her head, I will hunt you down. Now spread the word far and wide.”
I wasn’t asking for a whole bucket of water. Just a drop. Just a drop was more than enough. Just one look.
“Are you for real? This is what you would call a highlighter. I’m a princess. I glitter. I sparkle. I rule over the land.”
“You know when people say ‘You complete me’?” I continued. “I don’t
believe in that. How do you complete someone when you’ve lost yourself in loving them? How do you find yourself? You have to learn to be strong without him, so when one of you is weak, you’re not stuck in the same hole of weakness together. That’s what will destroy you. You can’t be weak together.”
“It’s one of my favorite parts in Alice in Wonderland. Alice asks the White Rabbit, ‘How long is forever?’ The White Rabbit answers, ‘Sometimes just
one second.’ This”—he kissed my lips—“this feels like forever right here.” He stared into my eyes. “How can I not wish for that?”
