Many of those who are pessimistic, depressed, or otherwise unhappy may actually have a much more accurate view of the quality of their lives than the cheery optimists who constitute the bulk of humanity.17 The views of the unhappy may well be harder to have and to live with, but they may be more accurate and, in that sense, more rational.
