At this point in the conversation God said something else that Adam must have found disquieting. He told Adam that he had only been testing him, to see if he would be willing to settle for any of the beasts brought before him. There is nothing in the Bible about a test. “It is not good that the man should be alone,” God in Genesis says; “I will make him an help meet for him.” The words clearly bothered Milton, as they had bothered many generations of commentators.
