His concerns were far more spiritual. What he still craved was the sensation of wholeness—the profound belonging and authenticity he associated with the reservations and communes. They didn’t harbor a shred of alienation. They were at one with humanity. It was the same craving he felt when contemplating that missing photograph of Earth. This thinking was the exact opposite of Ayn Rand’s vision of libertarianism; a hunger for cooperation, sharing, and a self-conscious awareness of our place in a larger system.
