Only once did Jesus actually write. He was sitting in the courtyard of the temple, teaching those who had gathered around him, when a group of priests and scribes dragged in a woman who had committed adultery. According to the law, written in the Hebrew Bible, she should be stoned to death, and the scribes were hoping that he would come out publicly against the sentence, and therefore against the law, so they could attack him.
