Because displays of loyalty can enhance one’s status in a tribe, we can expect individuals to attempt to “cheat” or to “game the system” by appearing to make sacrifices and to participate in unpleasant rituals without actually doing so. As economist Robin Hanson has observed, we can expect human nature to include a large measure of hypocrisy.
