Some people who have dementia seem to have more behavioral symptoms in the evening. The reasons for this vary from person to person but include afternoon fatigue, afternoon caregiver fatigue, loss of the usual patterns of hormonal secretion that follow a twenty-four-hour cycle, lessened stimulation later in the day, and, least likely, lowered light levels later in the day (the source of the label sundowning).
