My goal is that he learns to check out his environment, evaluate a situation, and make an educated decision about how to respond.

my goal is not to have a dog I can distract away from something in the environment, but to have a dog who can think for himself when something new or distracting is in the environment. Take the time to let your dog think through his options and show you what he can choose.
