Raymond Carver, entitled “Late Fragment.” The poem begins with what I am calling the bonus question, which is likely the most important question any of us will ever face: “And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so?” The “even so” at the end of the question, to me, perfectly captures the reality that pain and disappointment are inevitably a part of a full life, but also the hope that life, even so, offers the possibility of joy and contentment.
