What truly mattered was that my mother knew I forgave her. I am tempted to say that forgiving those you love—and letting them know that you forgive them—ought to truly matter to you. But I cannot say for sure, because what truly matters is up to you. My only suggestion is that you regularly ask this question—of others, for sure. But more importantly, you should ask this question of yourself, and you should answer it honestly and fearlessly. If you do, this question won’t just help you get to the bottom of an issue or a problem. It will also help you get to the heart of your life.
