What seems morally crystal clear in peacetime seems terribly muddled during war. This is what war does. It muddies everything. It will continue to challenge our moral compass the longer it continues.
Wrestling with our consciences is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it is a sign that we live in extraordinarily difficult times. To easily succumb to that which simply makes us feel better is the weak path to take.
