Look, you know what a penny looks like. You probably see one every day, but I bet you couldn’t answer all of the questions in the previous paragraph. Why? Because we don’t really look at the things we think we already know. We don’t study the familiar. The very fact we consider something familiar sort of stifles any impulse to study it.
