Our souls need a good looking at. Most people don’t and won’t do this. In fact, all day our souls are whispering to us that they need some tending, but we’re listening to the noise of social media or satellite television or pop religion, making sure the squeaky wheel gets drowned out.

Sometimes I’d think of things to say, but if I was wise that day I wouldn’t say them.

For all eternity, he is a fountain of life running free, overflowing, spilling over levies and dams, flooding our hearts—and eventually the entire earth (Hab. 2:14)—with the boundless radiance of his majesty.

Just like the Flood, but with the opposite effect.

In a strange way, the old gospel hymns affect us more emotionally by not dealing primarily with how we feel.

The rhythm of listening to God in his Word gets frustrated by the distracting syncopation of the culture, like when the white people try clapping along to a song at church.

we ought to read the New Testament as if Jesus in the Gospels is giving us sheet music for a masterwork symphony and as if Paul and the other New Testament authors are teaching the church how to perform it.

the solution to bad things we do isn’t good things to do but good things to be.
