You were calling for me, weren’t you, cat?’ Yes, yes, I certainly was!
Did you know that animals are much more multilingual?
And so began our new life together. Satoru was the perfect roommate for a cat, and I was the perfect roommate for a human.
Humans who think we don’t understand them are the stupid ones.
Satoru should be thankful I’m such an exceptionally bright cat.
Satoru switched to the car stereo and a light orchestral melody started playing. Okay, this wasn’t so bad. ‘My mother used to like this. Paul Mauriat.’ Hm, not bad at all. I could picture doves about to fly off, a happy vision from the feline perspective.
I just like this silver van, that’s all. ’Cause it was mine even before I met Satoru.
Cat lovers have a special place in their hearts for kittens.
‘But you don’t need to complain about every little thing. Just take it as it comes, be grown-up about it.’
‘I’ve dreamed about living the country life. Like in Miyazaki’s film My Neighbour Totoro, do you know it?’
From my first experience of the sea, I learned a valuable lesson.
The sea is where you go to reminisce when you are far away from home.
Whenever there’s anything major happening in our family we need to inform both our dog and cat – this proposal by Chikako had become a firm family rule.
At that moment, we were without doubt the greatest travellers in the world. And I was the world’s greatest travelling cat.
If it came to a fight, I was several leagues above this mutt. You may talk big, but I bet you’ve never been in a life-and-death scrape.
‘I’ll come as often as I can to check on you, so if you get lonely, just hang in there.’ Any chance you can refrain from the over-protective comments in front of the others? You’re embarrassing me.
There are so many things in life that are beyond our control.
I am Satoru’s one and only cat. And Satoru is my one and only pal. And a proud cat like me wasn’t about to abandon his pal. If living as a stray was what it took to be Satoru’s cat to the very end, then bring it on.
After that, I became Satoru’s commuting cat.
As we count up the memories from one journey, we head off on another. Remembering those who went ahead. Remembering those who will follow after. And someday, we will meet all those people again, out beyond the horizon.
