Wallace’s speeches in the 1964 campaign drew protests from civil rights activists and liberal college students. That was exactly what he wanted. In Cincinnati in ’64, Wallace shouted to his crowd about the protesters outside. “When you and I start marching and demonstrating and carrying signs,” he told his folks, “we will close every highway in the country!” He called the protesters “little pinkos.” Nearly a thousand of Wallace’s folks ran for the exit to attack the protesters.
