Wallace aimed his presidential campaign at the voters he called “the working people,” “the common folks,” “the people,” and sometimes just “the folks.” He never got into complex domestic or foreign policy issues. He stuck with feelings instead of facts. There was “too much dignity in government now,” Wallace told a reporter. “What we need is some meanness.”
