This greater ruler turned out to be Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayub, commonly known as Saladin, the nephew of one of Nuruddin’s top generals. In 1163, Nuruddin sent Saladin’s uncle off to conquer Egypt, just to keep it out of Franj hands, and the general took along his nephew.
