If Google is trying to assemble a universal structure of knowledge, and attempting to do so as a commercial enterprise, the project has an important precedent. This was precisely the aim that Denis Diderot, Jean D’Alembert, and the other encyclopédistes were striving for in mid-eighteenth-century France.
