“You Americans have only ever known victory. Even losses such as Vietnam and Iraq, or Afghanistan, have been whitewashed as mistaken ventures with unclear outcomes, not defeats. We Russians, we know the meaning of both victory and defeat. But you—you have not had armies raze your villages. You have not seen them besiege your cities for years on end. You do not know what it means to be truly free, as you have never really known oppression.”
Our forefathers fought for freedom in the Revolutionary War, but the Russians have never stopped fighting for their freedom. For thousands of years, their country has been a battleground. Communism fell, and then they were enslaved by a succession of dictators. Even the simplest of freedoms we take for granted is hard-won by them. Hundreds, if not thousands, of news reporters have been killed trying to expose corruption in Russia.
