People once thought the earth was flat.13 But here’s a more complex scenario: If you were living in Greece during the sixth century, and there was no way to deduce what the true shape of the earth was, and there was no way to validate or contradict the preexisting, relatively universal belief that the world was shaped like a flat disc—wouldn’t disagreeing with that theory be less reasonable than refuting it?
