“It’s crazy-making to face another human being and be ignored,” Turkle puts it bluntly. “It’s toxic for children, but even as adults, it’s hard to tolerate someone we’re trying to relate to showing so little empathy that they literally just turn away and look at something else as though we’re not trying to connect with them. And we’re doing that to each other now all the time. That’s our new social norm.”
