The only piece of furniture in the Holy of Holies is the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant is a small chest 3 3/4 feet long, 2 1/4 feet wide and 2 1/4 feet high. The lid attached to the Ark is called “The Mercy Seat.” The Greek word that means the same as the Hebrew word for Mercy Seat is hilasterion. The English word for hilasterion is “propitiation.” Propitiation simply means to make a way to be reconciled to God by satisfying His holy justice which requires sin to be dealt with.
