Odd how fate is so often embedded in the aftermath of a simple conversation.

There was a time when female amplitude was associated with prosperity. Then there was a period when being thin meant you were disciplined, drove yourself hard, and were careful about what you ate. Now being thin is proof you have enough money to pay for personal trainers, nutritionists, and tummy tucks within a week of giving birth.

Hers was a classic example of our tendency to project our personal failings onto others and then condemn them for their shortcomings.

In her desire to please him, she’d surrendered most of her preferences, acceding to his own.

Given my natural skepticism, I distrusted others’ ability to tell the truth. Heaven knows I have a problem with it myself.

Bayard wore sunglasses and a skimpy black Speedo, the bulge in front suggesting this was where he carried his leather sap.
