In the incarnation, when God became human, the notion that there is goodness in
humanity was restored. And with the possibility of restoration came hope for redemption. We see this when Jesus submitted himself to the sacrament of baptism (John 1:29–34), not just to locate his identity in a broader community of faith but also to reveal original righteousness for all of us: “We must do this to completely fulfill God’s justice,” or “righteousness,” as it’s translated in many other versions (Matthew 3:15).
