Her grandmother had once told her that one could blame ugliness on one’s genes and ignorance on one’s education, but there was absolutely no excuse whatsoever for being dull.
a sharp, spiky unfolded paper clip of a woman
engineered her own failures. Had she become an habitual coward, afraid to climb in case she fell?
The house was her emotional and physical fortress, and Anthony her shining knight.
Her capacity to care was instinctive. It was her greatest asset and her greatest vulnerability;
For Padua was more than just a house; it was a safe place to heal. A sanctuary for licking wounds, drying tears, and rebuilding dreams—however long it took. However long it took a broken person to be strong enough to face the world again. And he hoped that by his choosing her to finish his task, it might set Laura free. She was determined to find the woman whom she knew was still in there and get her out. By force, if necessary.
It was slowly dawning on Laura that life was still exciting and full of possibilities; opportunities that she had wasted years of her life wishing for instead of chasing. She had some serious catching up to do.
