This mantra deserves a pause for reflection. In a world in which “American leadership” has been seen by many as a requirement for the US to serve as a global police force responsible for defending those unable or unwilling to defend themselves, the Cold Warriors’ unambiguous commitment to “America first” will strike many internationalists as anachronistic, or even offensive.
