If a man’s word didn’t count for anything, then he automatically lost his self-worth.
“Ever since you slapped me, I haven’t stopped thinking about you. You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen—and your palm is even more beautiful.”
“I am your boyfriend.” He squeezed my wrist harder then pulled me further into his chest. “I don’t flirt with other women or let them flirt with me. You’ll do the same. End of story.” He pressed a hard kiss on my lips then released me immediately. He walked off like the conversation hadn’t just happened, and he grabbed a tray of food before he returned it to the line. Not once did he look at me, dismissing me like I didn’t exist at all.
“When you’re hungry for so long, you stop feeling hunger. It’s a relief, but it’s also the moment when your body starts to feed on itself, cannibalizing your muscles for energy. You barely have enough strength to move, let alone think. It’s the most terrifying and humbling experience anyone can ever know. It makes you understand just how fragile you are, that you’re susceptible to something everyone else takes for granted.”
It was the first time I didn’t want sex. I was hard as hell and eager for her, but this was enough for me. Just feeling her lips was enough to satisfy me. I pulled her closer and continued the tender embrace. When I was with her, I was a different man. I wasn’t so callused and hard. Somehow, I had a heart that I had assumed stopped beating a long time ago. And I had a soul.
The more someone knew about you, the easier it was for them to tear you down.
“That means they’re eager to settle down because they’re afraid to be alone. Or they’re on the rebound because they were in a great relationship until the chick dumped them. Now they can’t function without a partner. Just trust me on this.”
“I’m supposed to take care of you. Now let me.” His face was so close that his lips brushed against mine when he spoke. “I’m not asking you to stay with me out of obligation. I’m doing it because I want you under my roof where I can look after you. I want you to be in a safe place because you’re the most important thing in my life. I have to protect you. If something ever happened to you, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.” He finally released my wrists. “Now pack your stuff and let’s go.”
“You’re mine now.” I said it before, but I meant it in a different way. Now, I meant it so literally I wasn’t sure what the definition was.
“A real man admits when he’s wrong. He acknowledges his flaws and doesn’t hide behind his pride. Drop the ego and man up.”
