“Dad, are you going to live through this surgery?” he asked. Now, I love my son beyond words, and so like any father, I wanted to reassure him that of course I would live, I would be just fine. But I paused for a moment, searching for the right response. I felt into my experience before answering. Then I heard myself say, “I’m not taking sides.” My answer surprised us both.
