The vast majority of citizens - left or right - hold no career aspirations of becoming politicians. Don't presume that ordinary citizenry caucus to work out policy, leadership etc. They're busy working, or looking for work increasingly under Trump's exporting of jobs to Asia.

Author has pulled "classical republicanism" right out of her ass! No such ideal underwrites western political culture. For one thing, the social democracy lying just to the north of the U.S. carries forward the mighty Westminster tradition of parliamentary democracy from the United Kingdom, with a federal twist.
