Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been able to sense what other people are feeling.
“I’m a vampire and your family has been bonded to me for the past four hundred years. Only your blood can satisfy my thirst and give me the strength I need to survive, and only I can satisfy the ache you feel inside.”
“I can only die if my companion dies or if I lose almost all of my blood.”
This virus is transmitted from me through my saliva every time I bite you. It attaches to your cells and injects my altered genetic material directly into them. Your cells transcribe my DNA, which in turn provides you with traits like increased speed, agility, strength, and stamina.”
Considering the bond connecting us to one another, you’d think I would be able to read him more clearly, but perhaps since the bonding made me immune to his coercion spell it made him immune to my empathic ability. It seemed like a sound theory.
I realize I feel as though I haven’t eaten in a month of Sundays.
“Eat,” he orders. “If you’re still hungry, then you need to eat.”
“Are you sure there isn’t something in particular you would like for supper?” Julian prods, as if he can sense I’m not being truthful. “Well…” I should just tell them what I want. If they haven’t felt offended by my recent display of hunger, then they probably won’t care if I ask for what I’m craving. “I wouldn’t mind some steamed shrimp and crawdads, if they have any on sale.”
Why, out of all the people in the world, does he have to be the one I can’t read?
I see Julian pull my cell phone out of one of his front pockets and press the silence button. “Why do you have my phone?” I ask, feeling as if he’s just invaded my personal bubble of privacy.
“Eventually, we’ll need to move away from this city. People will begin to wonder why Helen and I aren’t aging if we stay here for more than ten years.”
Perhaps it was the final stage of the bonding between us. I’m not sure. All I do know is that we are a part of each other now, for as long as I live.
Sometimes things happen for reasons we can’t fully comprehend when they occur. All we can do is live and see where the future takes us.”
“You’re not just part alfar, Sarah. You are heir to the alfar throne. As far as I know, Shael is unable to have children.
“Don’t waste your tears on someone who obviously just needs time to figure out how to deal with his own feelings for you.
“I love you, Sarah Marcel,” he whispers. “My heart is yours to nourish or to break. For as long as I live I will love no one else, because no matter what happens my life is now forever connected to yours. You are my last companion because death is preferable to life without you in it.”
I may not live a perfect life, but I will live a life filled with love, honor, and absolutely no regrets.
