our responsibility was twofold. First, we had to make the public aware that germline editing was an emerging societal issue that should be confronted, studied, discussed, and debated. Second, we had to urge the scientific community—those individuals who were familiar with the technology, and who were aggressively pushing it in new directions—to hold off on exploring this one avenue of research.
