In order to shine on the moon, the sun’s light must travel a certain distance through space. But in order to illuminate itself, the sun doesn’t need to go anywhere or do anything. The sun’s nature is illumination. Just by being itself the sun illuminates itself. In other words, for the sun, to be itself and to illuminate itself are the same.
