Max Plank Institute, Liepzig, finally cracked the puzzle when they discovered that around 1–4 per cent of the DNA of all non-Africans is derived from Neanderthals. This interbreeding, moreover, appears to have happened soon after Homo sapiens arrived in the Middle East. Most of the offspring from such mating were probably infertile, like mules derived from the mating of horses and donkeys, but a small number were able to pass on their genes.
