Erectus were seafarers and manufacturers not only of technologically interesting hand tools, from Lower Palaeolithic Olduwan tools to Upper Palaeolithic Mousterian tools, but also vessels able to cross large bodies of water. Erectus communities, such as the one Gesher Benot Ya’aqov, developed cultural specialisation of tasks. And erectus controlled fire, as evidence from several erectus sites suggests.
