Here it is worth comparing the social atmosphere of the boys’ weeklies with that of the women’s weeklies, the ORACLE, the FAMILY STAR, PEG’S PAPER, etc. The women’s papers are aimed at an older public and are read for the most part by girls who are working for a living. Consequently they are on the surface much more realistic. It is taken for granted, for example, that nearly everyone has to live in a big town and work at a more or less dull job.
