Little Boy Lost

We have our whole lives to experience the ugliness. We have our whole lives to grapple with the reasons for society’s misplaced priorities. Trying to give a child a childhood was nothing to be ashamed of.

The racists on the edge of society were so fragile. The assumptions and lessons they’d been taught for generations now under attack from all directions, they had to feel what little they had was in danger of being taken away. Racism had become the last defense of a way of life that’d been dead for over a century.

Can’t be on top without somebody on the bottom.”

Whether I believed in God or not was an open question. It’s hard to maintain faith when life gives you such pain and organized religion seems to have been co-opted by the cruel and self-righteous.
