make relations between Russia and the rest of the Western world worse, during World War I, because of the revolution, Russia signed a hasty treaty with Germany to get out of the war quickly. When Russia did this, it was not clear that Germany would lose the war. Russia’s exit was worrisome, and even dangerous, for the rest of the countries fighting against Germany, especially France and Great Britain. This made the relationship between these nations tense as well.
Many people think of 1960s America as the decade of the “hippies”: anti-war protests, free love, new music, et cetera. However, in reality, this culture did not emerge until very late in the decade. Most of the 1960s closely resembled what many people popularly remember as the 1950s.
Both countries interfered in the affairs of other parts of the world, unsettling countries and destabilizing governments, causing destruction and death and revolution and civil war, just in the name of allies. It was a dangerous game; in many ways, the Cold War was a war of attrition: attrition of allies.
