It is much more helpful—and much more consistent with what we now know about thoughts—to pay attention to the fact that intrusive thoughts may feel terrible but aren’t dangerous. So, instead of learning how to distract yourself from the thoughts, your goal is to learn how to reduce the distress they trigger. Thoughts that don’t matter have no power.
