Some countries are more willing than others to accept high levels of taxation in return for public services such as welfare, depending principally on whether citizens believe the money will be well spent. Yet even in such countries, of which Sweden is one, there is a cost, for high taxes have some disincentive effect on work and on entrepreneurship, and lead some high earners to emigrate. They also act as an incentive to avoid taxes.
