Masculine tenderness has a straightforwardness, perhaps as a result of the conditioning that ‘boys are simple creatures’. Masculine compassion is a calm, dependable arm round the shoulder. Good men are ‘rocks’, invested with introverted qualities that are not celebrated enough. These qualities are often sidelined by the melodramatic bluster of cartoon masculinity.
