“Hurry along, then,” I said, grabbing my orchid and securing it safely in my journal. “I want to sit by the window.” “Hmm.” “What now?” I asked, losing patience. “I usually sit by the window. You may have to sit in my lap.”

I was a young girl growing up in a world run by old men. I’d pick and choose my battles wisely.
I’d like to remind each man who held such poor opinions of a woman that their beloved mothers were, in fact, women.
I didn’t see any men running about, birthing the world’s population then going on to make supper and tend to the house. Most of them buckled to their knees when the slightest sniffle attacked them.
Every male in my life felt it necessary to put chains on me, and I despised it.

People were always providing in death what they would not do in life, it seemed.
“She said Jack was there that day as well. That he’d seen you.”

“No one in their right mind will think me an East End resident looking as wonderful as I do. I may even don a wig.”
“You must know what you mean to me? Surely you must know how I feel about you, Audrey Rose. The thought of losing you…”
I’m not sure which of us moved first, but suddenly my hands were cradling his face and our lips were crashing together, propriety and polite society be damned.
“Get on with it, boy. Make yourself useful and stop staring at my niece like that.”

Thomas had admitted his love for me, but as with many things lately, I was unsure it was real. Perhaps he only felt beholden to me out of pity in the wake of all that happened.
If Thomas left me friendless at school, I’d sink into an abyss so deep I feared I’d never resurface.
but his flirtations kept me afloat in a sea of conflicting feelings.
