Sometimes the code was descriptive: wěi 暐 (the bright shining of the sun), wēi 溦 (a fine rain), or wēi 渨 (a cove, or a bend in the hills). Sometimes heartbreaking: wèi 未 (not) or wéi 湋 (to flow backwards).
