Dendrochronology is limited to the relatively recent time domains inhabited by archaeologists. But tree growth is not the only process that spurts and slows on an annual cycle, or on some other regular or even irregular cycle. Any such process can in principle be used for dating, aided by the same ingenious trick of daisy-chaining overlapped patterns. And some of these techniques work over a longer period than dendrochronology itself.
