There is a related virus, in fact a set of viruses, that get around this problem. All of us are infected with them, because they have managed to infiltrate the human germ line, and so are passed from parent to child just like the rest of our DNA. These are called endogenous retroviruses, and they have been infecting us and our ancestors for millions of years.
