The Austrians roused Ruthenian (that is, Ukrainian) peasants in eastern Galicia against their Polish nationalist landlords by freeing them from serfdom, allowing them a representative Ruthenian Council and permitting the publication of the first-ever periodical in the province written in Ukrainian.
