In 1987, allegations emerged that Bofors had paid bribes to procure an artillery contract from the Indian Army. Among the men who received kickbacks was Mr Q, according to the private diary of the managing director of Bofors, Martin Ardbo. Later, it emerged that Mr Q was Ottavio Quattrocchi, who was based in Delhi as the representative of Snamprogetti, an Italian engineering company that was part of the oil and gas giant Eni.
