Ministers and government officials would oblige the Wahids because they had access to Gandhi; this privilege saved them precious time and money. Licences that could take months or even years to obtain could be had in a matter of days. Back then, access to the Gandhi family guaranteed success. Rajiv’s premature death was, therefore, a blow for East West and its prospects.
