Asghar Ali Engineer has rightly stated: Nehru was somewhat soft towards Muslim communalism, not because he approved of minority communalism. He was unsparing to both minority and majority communalism. He was somewhat soft towards the Muslims as they were backward and more disadvantaged and also because he wanted to allay their fears so that they could be reassured and retained in the Indian Union. (Engineer in Dikshit 1989; p.219) It is difficult to accept the logic of Nehru in the matter.
