One girl, half Dutch and half English by birth, was trapped in Arnhem during that winter. After an uncle was murdered by the Nazis she joined the Dutch resistance, carrying messages through checkpoints hidden in her shoe and helping to save a British paratrooper who had become stranded during the disastrous invasion of Arnhem.
