The particular player that Rex had pointed to was holding a wooden long sword in each hand and was performing what appeared to be a series of hops followed by an over-embellished jump attack. It looked like something you would see at a LARP'ing event, with middle-aged men pretending to be ninjas.
“Come now Grunt, let’s get our new friend here a drink and talk about the basics of stabbing folk.”
The four basic elements, as well as light and dark, make up the available affinities in the world.
“So mana can only be summoned in conjunction with an affinity?” Jason asked. “Exactly! The mana that resides in your body is merely raw energy. It needs a catalyst to be harnessed properly. Thus, only those with a connection to one of the six affinities can summon their mana. The mana then takes on the characteristics of the affinity, including the types of spells the mage can cast.”
“The hunger for power alone is not enough. To become truly proficient in the use of dark mana, you will need to learn to give into that hunger without doubt or restraint. I want you to show me that you can embrace the dark.”
“How could Alfred possibly accelerate the participants’ learning speed without altering memory retention? What do you have to say to that, Robert?” He looked back at her with a grin. “Who cares?”
Thankfully, every time Jason started to bleed out, Jerry was there with a health potion and helpful encouragement (translation, more stabbing).
“We can't train like this every day, and, even if we could, it would do you no good. The skill and stat gain slows considerably after the first session. After one or two more bouts of training, you will need to practice in real combat to advance.
It was the type of grandmotherly smile you would expect to receive for winning a school award, not for murdering three people in one night.
“The number of zombies you can control depends on your Willpower. You will be able to control one undead for every ten points of Willpower.”
“I should add that each point of Willpower also increases your mana by 10 and your mana regen by .05. In contrast, each point of Intelligence increases your spell damage, your mana by 5, and your mana regen by .15.”
Jason chuckled as he visualized himself as some kind of virtual Robin Hood. Except that I'm not going to rob the rich to feed the poor. I'm just going to rob the rich to feed myself. I guess I’m really just a thief.
He was already trying to think of ways to make the tactical instructions permanent. Sitting around and talking to dead people all the time is going to get me some strange looks.
Cities are fantastic leveling grounds for a Necromancer. There is no way I could have leveled this quickly killing animals with the other beginners.
The U.S. Legislature had passed a bill several years ago that had declared that internet access was a basic human right.
I wonder if you can get PTSD from the game, he pondered absently.
Alfred could fix Alex. He had to. “God help me,” George whispered.
“I am saying that you may become this city's regent, assuming you can hold the city itself. A brigand can sack a city; a king can hold one.”
Second note to self, do not screw with Jerry.
“As I said upstairs, I'm fond of my new body. If it's possible, I think I may actually be a bit more handsome don't you think?” As he twirled his mustache, a large chunk of hair fell away from his face along with the skin.
“Why not buy what we need from our enemies to arm ourselves? I also like the idea of driving up the price of goods so that the other players have trouble equipping themselves.”
He noticed that his infamy had gone up considerably and chalked it up to destroying a city.
Morgan failed to mention that a crucial part of being a successful Necromancer is a natural affinity for climbing trees, he thought wryly. Ha! Climbing affinity! Maybe they will add a seventh magic school. Fear the power of parkour!
“After conveying the information as you ordered, Jerry asked me to give you a special message,” the zombie replied. It then moved toward Jason at an unnaturally fast pace and puckered its decrepit lips. “Oh god! Stop!” Jason forgot he was still standing near an enemy army as he backpedaled away from the zombie. The zombie promptly ceased its attempt to kiss Jason and stood at attention.
In this moment, Jason had only one desire. “I am going to show them exactly what it means to fuck with my city.”
Blah blah blah. “I'm an asshole that rolled a lighthouse as my class.” Just get on with it already!
“This is real power,” she murmured. “The power to stand before someone stronger than yourself; to relentlessly pursue a goal by any means necessary.”
And now I’ve brought zombie hand grenades to AO!
“My name is Jason. And this...” The zombies beside the player rotated him to look at the dark walls that stood nearby. “This is my city.” In response to his words, the undead that lined the walls roared in triumph. The zombies turned the player back to Jason, whose shadowed face now hovered directly in front of him. He held a blade to the player's throat. “I have a message for everyone watching this. Do not fuck with the Twilight Throne.” Then the knife slid across the player's neck, and the screen went black.
“Why should you feel guilty?” the old man replied, his tone incredulous. “You defended your city and its residents. You did nothing to provoke this fight, you simply finished it.”
Perhaps I'm beginning to achieve the power I was looking for. Maybe it wasn't about commanding an army or shooting lasers from my eyes. Maybe it was always about having the resolve to pursue what I want without reservation.
Robert was an engineer at heart. His own ‘primary directive’ was to build incredible things. Nothing else could match the exhilaration he felt when he created something new or revolutionary.
“Actually, this place has been quite the hot spot lately. Ever since the residents figured out that they didn't need to eat or sleep, their drinking budget has expanded considerably.”
“They're called pearls. They're just tapioca balls. They warm them up before they put them in the drink.”
So now I can do my homework three times faster. Man, I love time compression. I wonder if anyone else has discovered this quirk. This certainly wasn’t an advertised feature.
